F.A.Q.

Q. Are the hounds you use purebred?

A. No, they are 7/8th or 3/4 bred

Q. What is the difference between hunting with bloodhounds and Drag hounds?

A. Bloodhounds hunt a natural scent, i.e. that of man, while Drag hounds hunt a chemical scent. So hunting with Bloodhounds is a lot slower.

Q. Can anyone come hunting?

A. Yes, hunting is open to all. If you wish to find out more, then click onto any of our pages and find out more information and where we hunt.

Q. Is hunting with Bloodhounds an alternative to Foxhunting?

A. No. Hunting with Bloodhounds is a field sport in its own right. Bloodhounds hunt the "natural scent of man" (known as hunting the clean boot) and so keep the art of venery alive. Because of this, if anything, it compliments foxhunting.

Q. What does the art of venery mean?

A. Venery is the art of hunting hounds, the skill of a huntsman with his hounds to pursue the quarry they are hunting.

Q. What should I wear?

A. If you look on the Meet Card page, you will find all the information you need there.

Q. What day of the week do you meet?

A. Normally Sundays. We meet at 12.00 noon and move off at 12.30. We also have occasional mid week meets on a Thursday, look on the meet card page for further details.

Q. Do we have to jump big fences?

A. No, there are always ways around any jumps. A non-jumping field master is assigned to each days hunting, just make yourself known to them.

Q. What happens if I break a hunt jump or damage a fence line?

A. If in the event that this happens, it is not a crime, THE CRIME IS NOT TO TELL SOMEONE. The Field Master or any of the Joint Masters need to know, but if you are unable to tell them, then please let a member of hunt staff know - we need to be able to check the fence in question and make it stock proof where necessary.

Q. Is it fast and furious?

A. This will depend on the scenting conditions and how well the hounds are working out the line that the quarry has taken.

Q. What should I do if I am near hounds?

A. If you are on your horse and near hounds, you should ALWAYS turn so that you and your horse face them. It takes a long time for hounds to trust horses; one kick from a horse can quickly change this.

Q. How do I know who is who at the meet?

A. At the meets the hunt staff and field master are introduced to you before we move off from the meet. If you are still unsure ask - anyone with a grey collar on his or her hunt coat will be able to help. Hunt staff (huntsman, whipper-ins) have right of way at all times as do the hounds. The field master has right of way over  the mounted field. If you would like to know who is who, then go to the Who's Who page.

Q. Are Bloodhounds the same as Drag hounds?

A. No, a Bloodhound is a breed in its own right, a drag hound could be any type of hound. The term drag hunting tends to refer to the type of hunting and not the type of hound. Bloodhounds natural quarry is "man", the drag hounds hunt a chemical that is "dragged" on a piece of cloth or other means of laying the scent.

Q. We have read a lot about the reforming of the MBHA, why has it reformed?

A. It has reformed for various reasons. One of them is that a lot of people put Bloodhounds under the same heading as Drag hunting. As already explained in an answer to a previous question this is totally wrong, and there are packs of Bloodhounds who feel that the Bloodhound needs its own Association to govern its own type of hunting. If you would like to know more go to the MBHA web site.
